Tell us what attracted you to join the NWF?
I was drawn by the mandate. I love working in an infrastructure deal environment, and to be able to work on transactions which will make a difference in getting the UK to net zero by 2050, and promoting UK growth is a great honour.
What does your role involve?
I lead and am accountable for the origination and delivery of complex, bespoke infrastructure transactions across debt, equity and guarantees for my allocated sectors of CCUS, Hydrogen, Steel, Waste and Water. I have also been responsible for the further development of the guarantee product.
What is the NWF like to work for?
As an arm’s length body of HMT and a public sector financial institution, NWF is a mix between private and public sector and we aim to bring the best of both to the work environment. It is a fast paced deal environment which is very collaborative within and across teams. We are a relatively small organisation meaning you can get to know most people. We are all here to make a difference and solve challenging problems through finance.
What were you doing before you joined the Fund, and how has your experience helped with the role you are now doing?
Prior to working at NWF I was at UK Export Finance (UKEF) for 18 years, my last role was Head of Project Finance Risk in the Risk Management Group. As UKEF is another public sector financial institution, there are a lot of parallels with NWF. I was working on structuring of large scale project finance transactions almost exclusively overseas; it is great to now use these skills and experience and apply them to transactions in the UK.
What are your highlights since joining the NWF?
I was permanent employee 20 when I started NWF just over two years ago. It has been great to see the organisation grow and flourish. Our pipeline is so exciting and the deals we work on are pushing the market, it is great to be a part of that.
What are you looking forward to next at the NWF?
It is a great show of confidence for the former UKIB to be transformed into the NWF. I’m excited by our increased mandate and new sectors. We have an exciting pipeline of opportunities coming and I am keen to deliver the transactions which help tackle climate change and create the growth the UK needs.
What would you say to anyone thinking of applying for a role here?
For people who want to work in an infrastructure (and beyond) investment job with real purpose, then definitely consider NWF. It is a collaborative, friendly team who are working together to solve complex problems and deliver innovative financing solutions.
