Meet Jeremy Barker

We spoke to Director in Banking and Investments Jeremy about his role and what attracted him to join the NWF.

Jeremy BarkerTell us what attracted you to join the NWF?

Throughout my career I have tried to be involved in roles which are both interesting and where I think I can make a difference. That has led me ultimately to a career supporting the development of new infrastructure. Using my skills in the context of helping to overcome climate change and support the economies of poorer parts of the country was a big attraction, particularly since the NWF targets projects where we are genuinely needed and might even be seen as too risky for my previous employers. It also helped that the NWF is based in Leeds which is closer to my home in the Peak District.

What does your role involve?

I lead the Retrofit sector for the Banking & Investments team.  The role involves sourcing, filtering and negotiating transactions involving the decarbonisation of existing buildings. Our initial projects in the sector will help to deploy £1 billion towards retrofitting social housing, something to make anyone proud.

What is the NWF like to work for?

I’m really enjoying it. For a start we are all, by definition, relatively new to the organisation and everyone is enthusiastic and keen to make the business a success. There is a genuine desire to fix problems where we can.

What were you doing before you joined the Fund, and how has your experience helped with the role you are now doing?

I started my career at Lloyds Bank and spent a significant part of my time there as a project financier in the infrastructure team before moving to be part of the KPMG infrastructure advisory group. In those roles I have been involved in transactions in most sectors which has been helpful in giving me experience that I can apply to shape new projects.  I have also had roles as a COO and People Leader and I particularly enjoy passing on my experience to the juniors in the team.

What are your highlights/ proudest achievements since joining the NWF?

That’s easy – deploying £1 billion towards giving people in social housing warmer homes.

What are you looking forward to next at the NWF?

There is so much in the retrofit sector still to do – and each sub-sector has its own particular challenges.  I’m hopeful we can help overcome some of those challenges.

What would you say to anyone thinking of applying for a role here?

Go for it – there are few jobs I’d rather do (maybe Harry Kane’s? but I’m in my 50s so I’m probably past it).
