Peter Clifton

Tell us what attracted you to join the NWF?

I was attracted to join the National Wealth Fund (NWF) to have the opportunity to make impactful investments in the clean energy sector, focusing on economic growth and sustainability. The chance to work with a team of highly skilled and experienced professionals and getting projects delivered that might not have otherwise happened was incredibly appealing to me.

What does your role involve?

My role at the NWF involves originating, evaluating and executing upon potential investment opportunities that meet the NWF investment criteria. The role requires engagement with industry, conducting thorough due diligence, negotiation of commercial terms and managing the internal investment approval process. I work closely with various internal and external stakeholders to ensure that our investments align with our strategic goals.

What is the NWF like to work for?

Working at the NWF is both challenging and rewarding. The organisation has fostered a collaborative and inclusive environment where your contributions to specific products and sector knowledge are highly valued. The senior management team is open and supportive, and there is a strong sense of purpose in the work we do.

What were you doing before you joined the Fund, and how has your experience helped with the role you are now doing?

Before joining the NWF, I worked in UK infrastructure teams of various commercial banks as well as government owned investment institutions where I gained extensive experience in financial analysis, deal structuring, and client management. This background has been invaluable in my current role, as it has equipped me with the skills needed to assess investment opportunities and manage complex debt and equity investment opportunities effectively.

What are your highlights/ proudest achievements since joining the NWF?

One of my proudest achievements since joining the NWF has been leading the £165m investment in a new (clean) liquid air long duration storage project. A project that could not have been delivered without NWF involvement. Seeing the positive impact of our investment and its potential to make a significant contribution to the decarbonisation of our power system by scaling up new emerging technologies has been incredibly rewarding.

What are you looking forward to next at the NWF?

I am looking forward to exploring new investment opportunities in the short and long electricity storage sector in particular (my allocated sector) and continuing to contribute to projects that support CP2030. I am also excited about the potential for professional development and the chance to take on new challenges within the organisation.

What would you say to anyone thinking of applying for a role here?

If you are passionate about making a difference to our Net Zero targets, the CP2030 plan and want to be part of a dynamic and forward-thinking organization, the NWF is the place for you. The opportunities to work on impactful projects make it an excellent place to build your career. I highly recommend applying and becoming part of our team.
